0 Comments Road Trip! Beer Review - Stormcloud IPA
I recently took a trip to both Dallas and Austin for work and wanted to check out some local brews and food. My first night deep in the heart of Texas was in Dallas and curious as to where I should go, I told the concierge I am a beer guy and would like to go somewhere with a good selection. Without hesitation he told me about Press Box Grill near the hotel because they have 36 beers on tap and figured that was a winner!
I headed to the bar to find that of the 36 beers on tap, they had just kicked their two IPAs and didn't have any on tap. How do you say disappointment in Texan? After ordering my burger of choice (Press Box has quite a selection!), I decided I wanted to try a local beer and order a bottle of Stormcloud IPA from Rahr & Sons Brewing company.
Breakdown
Serving Type: Bottle
Appearance: Poured a nice burnt orange color with a decent fluffy white head that vanished pretty quickly and left some nice lacing around the glass.
Aroma: where are the hops? I had to do a double take to make sure this was indeed labeled as an IPA. Way too much malt on the nose.
Taste: Follows the nose, malty with little to no hops. Not very good. Think they maybe sacrificed flavor for "drinkability".
Mouthfeel: Pretty light body and medium carbonation
Overall: when the first thought is "Ear Wax" when sipping a beer, that is NOT GOOD. This is just not a good IPA. Let's put it this way - it's memorably bad. I have had plenty of bad beers that I soon forgot, i won't soon forget this experience. Willing to give Rahr & Sons a shot on another beer, but their IPA just did not do it for this hop head.
